Typefaces of the Fallen

Every year, hundreds of Canadians die from work-related accidents. To memorialize those who didn’t make it home, I worked with the WSIB to create Typefaces of the Fallen – a custom-built, hand-crafted typeface using the likeness of Canadians who died in the workplace. From A through Z, each letter was hand-crafted to represent one deceased Canadian worker – capturing their spirits and forever memorializing them. The letters were used to create new, more impactful workplace safety signs. Mounted near machinery and potential hazards, each sign featured a letter and told the story of the individual behind the letter – reminding workers of the real consequences of unsafe work. The typeface and the signs were both individually shortlisted at the 2018 Cannes Lions Festival.
